volume might have been a little high since OG was low. Everything else on brewday went smoothly.
OG 1.048. used preground coriander bc I thought I had some and didn't.
I only hit an OG of 1.052 = 70% efficiency. Still ok bc I added extra grain anyway. Likely a 5% abv when done which is fine.
great brew day and exceeded number expectations. OG was high after chilling and had just 5 gal so I added 8 cups (1/2 gal) of water. Still worked out to 78% efficiency. Final Gravity was 1.014 for a ABV of 6.98%. Racked to 2ndary on top of toasted coconut 300F stirred every 5 min for about 25-30 minutes. Nice toasty roasty flavors. Very smooth. Light mouthfeel for as sweet as the final flavor is.
Iodine test for starch was a little iffy so I let it go an extra 10 minutes. OG was low at 1.063. Not sure it was accurate because the haziness seemed to make the refractmtr hard to read. it will still be beer! Realize late at night that I can of course adjust the OG. (duh) So if my Maths are Mathing (nod to Nick Waggamon) Corn sugar and DME are both 46 points per gallon and so to increase from 1.063 to 1.074. Need 1.2 lb of extra fermentables. Added 4cups of water to a pot boiled. Took off ...
Brew 3 of 3, 10 gal batches. Brew went fine. OG estimated by pulling equal weight of wort from both brew kettles like last time. 1.052. Same as last time 78% efficiency. Pitched on yeast cake from first 2 batches. Original FG 1.012 per Pete Drinks. 5.08ABV expeted.
Brew Day 2. Second of 3x 10 gal batches. Racking B1 to Carboy 2nd aryand pitching this batch on yeast from B1. OG was 1.052. Racked to 2nd 11/27. Initial FG was 1.028 Converted with Pete Drinks is 1.014. Est ABV% 4.82. Cold Crashed carboys 2 days ago and racked to Kegs 12/1/23. 1tsp of gelatin in 170F water and added to kegs for finings. This batch did get irish moss also.
Batch 1 of 3 for the wedding. Originally set recipe as 75% efficiency, OG expected to be 1.049. Actual OG was 1.051 which calculates to 78% efficiency. The big difference was that I let the mash go an extra 15 min (75min total) because I had to go get pizza. I also sparged a little slower than normal I think, but since it was 10 gal I'm not sure. I also had SoCo do a double grind on the grain which was my original hypothesis of the reason. I will go back to 60 min mash and see if the efficiency ...
brew day went great. no problems. mash steady at 151F. 5 gal apx to primary. OG 1.060. just a little low. placed primary in a water bath with wet towel around it, temp is at 68F apx
Brew was a little light after boil. only at 1.043. Added 1/2 lb of sugar and brought OG to 1.049. fermentation started being noticable after apx 24 hours. primary is in a water bath with ice packs changed out every 12 hours apx. apx temp in bath is 68F.
Not sure why the OG is so low. I would blame the hemp seeds, but those were not added until the boil.
toasted hemp seeds in a hot dry skillett. turned down to medium after a couple minutes but it was too hot and seed got a little scorched. did another batch and toasted starting with skillett at medium for 10 minutes.
OG was high but I was having trouble with my refractometer. took reading with hydrometer and after temp correction it shows only 1.065 Should have been 1.070. Mash temps were consistent at 151 to 149F. I am usually right on with my numbers so I feel confident that I hit them as expected.
started mash at 155F but was shooting for 151. did not realize I was high until after 35 min. then decreased temp to 151 for remainder of mash
mashed in at 152F. strike water was apx 170-175F. I did add a little cold water to mash to adjust temp. temp held at 152F with only 1 small addition of boiling water at the 20 minute mark. Starch conversion test at 50 min showed completion. Mashed out with 2 gal of 180F water. Vorlauf 2 qts. No problems with mash. Apx 1pm, wort into primary at 83F and left in water bath with ice packs until temp dropped to 67F. Pitched 2 L starter at 6pm. Plan to change ice packs Q8h. Fermenting well at 7am ...
