BIAB 6 gal total into mash strike temp 162, mash at 153 for 60 mins. Drain for 15 mins then boil for 60 mins. About 3.7 gal into fermenter 1.068 gravity at 90 degrees while cooling
using 18 oz fresh hops (cascade, columbus, centennial). About half at 35 min, the other half hopstand. Only 4.5 gallons to fermenter at 1.048. Tried batch sparging but don't know what aI'm doing yet. The brew bag got stuck in out spiigot9/23/2020 - mov to secondary. 1.012 gravity whiich will male this about 4.7% abv. Also added about 2 oz dry hops Cascade/Centennial mix from jars. Quite messy to dump from packed jar into hops bag - use a fork or knife to break it up next time.
mash might have gotten a bit too hot for last 10 minutes.1.048 in fermenter but didn't measure until after I'd added yeastusing harvested Wyeast 1318 - which might have gotten too warm on a hot Saturday while feeding.5.25 gals to fermenter. Using all leaf hops from our backyard24may to secondary, 1014 gravity, hazy, fruity bt I detected a hint of cider - not in flavor thogh28may 1 oz of ?Columbus cone / my hops31ay dry hops 1oz each of mosaic, Citra, Simcoe6jun 28 bottles (22 oz) - nice fruty ...
broke thermometer in boil kettle1.052 OG, but I forgot to add turbinado. Perhaps I can boil to sanitize and add later. Also seemed like I had too much volume so I boiled an extra 10 min, but still ended up with only 4.6 to fermenterMore than 7 gals from sparge, seemed too much for kettle so boiled 1.5 gal separately for 30 mins, but only ended up wtih 4.6 gals to fermenter. Kinda weird.4/19/20 - added the 8 oz turbinado to fermenter after boiling, cooling4/29/20 - to secondary 1.014 ...
mash a bit messed up with temp getting to 172 (remote thermometer blew it) and then didn't really come down from there. sparge was fairly quick, didn't mess around, probably 7 gallons to kettle. OG about 5.4 , 4.5 gallons to fermenter4 oz old mosaic hops in boil for 35 min. After 60 min boil it only took about 3 mins with coil to get to 180 - added the homegrown hops (cascade/columbus - these seem stale so not expecting much), 30 min hop stand. 3/1/2020 from primary to secondary with about ...
mash in thinner brew kettle, needed to raise temperature every 5 to 10 minutes. Saved a bit of time by heating sparge water in thicker kettle to 180 then transfering to Thermos cooler for sparge. about 1 oz fresh hops (Cascade / Centennial) at 40minsabout 1 oz fresh hops (Cascade / Centennial ) at 20minwanted to add another oz at 180 on cool but went for 212 to 170 too quickly.About 2.7 gal to fermenter at 1.052 OG10/12 - to secondary because driving to Sacramento and might not be back soon ...
temperature in mash declined by at least 10 degrees (from 154 to 142-ish). Added some of sparge water and mashed 10 mins longer, but didn't really recover temp, nor could I get mash-out to 170 since I was adding sparge water to cooler. Probably should mash in pot so I can heat it up. poor extraction - though smells awesome - 1.043 to fermenter. To fermenter at about 730pm, a few bubbles now at 730am.8/25/2019 - gravity at 1.010, transferred to secondary with about 0.2 oz CTZ and 0.3 oz citra. ...
Mash on stove in kitchen in older/thinner pot, a little seal leakage - took a bit too long to bring to mash temp, but after that fine. This allowed using the second big pot to be used to heat the sparge water quickly (?10-15 min) to 170 for sparging. Then slowly pour pyrex qt. measure cups over grain bed while draining into fermenter bucket. Didn't use tubular strainer - just grain bag with long spoon between bag and spigot to allow flow4/5/2018 - 5 days in 1.026 gravity (down from 1.062), ...
4 Feb - can't boil 8 gals water so 6 in one pot, 2 in a second on stove inside. After about 60 min transfer to single pot. At end of 90, let sit for 20 to cool to 180 then add flameout/hop stand hops, sit for 10 then cool to 70 using coil - about 25 mins. Only 4.25 g into fermenter?? So, took a risk and added 1.25 gal tap water to fermenter so 5.5 g total. Before adding water the gravity was about 1.080 - guessing that with adjustment it's about 1.06210Feb to secondary - about 5 gal, ...
allowed the mash to get too hot for a couple of minutes so added 0.5 gallon cold water to cool down. Adjusted mash thickness below to 1.66 in order to reflect 4.5 gal IN mash, therefore just 4.0 gallons sparge. Again held sparge water in blue cooler, passed into boil kettle/mash tun, then tube into white fermenter bucket. Seems like slightly less than desired 6.9 into boil, maybe 6.5?After 60 min boil, stand for 10 min, cool to 190 then use coil, cools to 180 in a couple of minutes - then ...
7May2017 - 5 gallons of sparge into blue beverage cooler (first time I've tried this) - 3 stage spage - blue cooler into 8 gal boil kettle (where mash occurred) into white bucket (and second white bucket because 7 gal runoff. All 7 gal dumped back into boil kettle for boil. Had to watch boil carefully for about 30 minutes to avoid boilover, but in the end about 5.3 gal to primary at 1.051 gravity. Bitter very nice flavor or fermentor wort. 14May2017 - to secondary, 1.012 gravity, added ...
Probably a 1/2 gallon short of sparge suggestion (4.2 instead of 4.70 gal) due to lack of capacity with boil kettle used for mashing. left an oz. of Cascade out of hopstand for dry hopping insteadOG 1.050, 5 gal into fermenter, seems a bit cloudy12/4/2016 - about 15 hours later fermentation has begun12/5/2016 - 24 hours later (about 40 hours total) fermentation still proceeding but seems to have slowed down - was there lots of activity in my absence? I hope so, or this will be a slow one ...
1.072 OG before introducing yeast. Mashed in brew pot, with grain bag, used just 3 gal sparge water, about 6 gallon runoff into fermenting bucket. Then back into brew pot for boil, about 5.2 gal after boil, 5 gal into fermenter.11/13/2016 SG at 1.015 and nice aroma, taste. Should have moved to secondary today11/18/2016 SG at 1.012 and initially was intending to just bottle it, but remembered that I hadn't yet dry hopped so moved to new plastic carboy (4 gal net) and added the 1oz Cascade ...
trying brew in bag - mash in blue cooler, heat sparge water in boil kettle (3 gal) to about 175 pull bag from cooler let sit in kettle for 10 mins, then drain into separate pan, add cooler wort to kettle and raise to boil, about 5 gal total before boil (perhaps a bit much - overestimated loss associated with grain absorption)0.5 oz Centennial after 10 mins (extra sitting around)hop stand for 40 mins once cooled to 180OG 1.065, though volume seems short, perhaps 2.5 gal at most - boiling much ...
1.034 gravity at 130 pre-boil ~5gal volume (overdid it on sparge volume), 1.048 adjusted for temp(3.5 to sparge rather than 3.1), guessing a bit below on the necessary boil time (75) and boil loss/hr (1.25)0.25 Citra added after 20 min (so 55 from end if 75 total)0.50 after 60 so maybe 15 from endgas tank empty after about 65, so we'll just have to see what happens from here ;-)hop stand at about 170 for 30 minsgravity post boil and cooling very disappointing 1.044??, a little over 3 gal to ...
using the second half of the Northern Brewer Off the Topper kit.1.074 OG into fermenterTues late evening 5April added first round of dry hops 0.5 Simcoe, 0.25 Amarillo, 0.25 Columbus, 0.25 Centennial, 0.125 Apollo.9April into secondary 1.022 gravity - aroma is slightly hoppy, taste sweet and enjoyable (harvested yeast)20Apr added second round of dry hops 0.5 simcoe, 0.25 each of Centennial, Columbus, and Amarillo, and 0.125 oz Apollo24April bottled FG 1.018 - very nice aroma and taste - I saved ...
interested in seeing if I can get greater gravity by using malt extract - also a larger batch without having a huge kettle. Started the yeast the day before and was a bit nervous because I didn't notice much activity. However, the yeast took off and within a day I had to replace the bubbler caps with a hose to cup of water - and to replace that because it got gunned up a day later.on Thursday 16Mar to secondary - wonderful aroma, decent taste, some sweetness nice hops aroma, gravity is about ...
13Dec2015 - though everything seemed to go smoothly little disappointing on the OG - perhaps I just used too much water? OG = 1.056, perhaps 1.1 gal to fermenter (originally I estimated 1.4 but upon transfer to secondary I had just over 1.0 gallon)19Dec2015 - gravity about 1.010 and smelling a bit wild so nervous today as I transfer to secondary (1 gallon jug)27Dec2015 - add 0.5 oz Mosaic pellets for dry-hop6Dec2015 - bottling (a few days late perhaps) 1.008 FG and things are smelling, tasting ...
10/25 - worked harder to maintain mash temp above 150 in thermos cooler. Perhaps 1.5 to fermenter @1.05010/30 - not clear that my yeast is working...slow at best (probably should have 'started' it)10/31 - transferred to secondary after checking gravity - 1.006 so yeast must have done the job - this should give about 5.7% ABV which would be near perfect! Taste is kind of bland though - slight bitter, no aroma which isn't surprising because nothing but the single Simcoe bittering addition. ...
10/4 will probably switch up hops a bit, depending on what I have on hand.1.014 at 140 degrees post-sparge, converts to 1.030 at 70 with 2.0 gallons into boil, which would be about 1.048 if reduced to 1.25 gallons, a bit lower than 1.054 target ;-(ugh. - just 1.040 after boil AND reduced all the way to 1 gal.So much for trying to use the mesh bag to sparge - also mashing temp dropped to 142 over the hour in thermos bucket. So, back to the pot, metal strainer technique I guess - at least for 1 ...
more inclusive notes on iphone notes. Attempting to estimate boil volume such that I get right OG AND a full gallon liquid to primary (usually about a quart short). 1.022 at 134 after mash = 1.035 (@70) equivalent before boil2 gal reduced to slightly more than 1.25 after boil.Hopstand for 40 minutes1.052 OG after cooling.0.25 oz Columbus for 60 boil, then 0.125 Columbus, 1.0 Cascade in hopstand - all tossed out with trub. Decide later what to dry hop with.Use funnel and mesh bag to get from ...
7/21/2015 - After sparging gravity is 1.034 at 137 degrees, which is about 1.05 adjusted. Estimate ?1.100 if after boil volume is 0.75, hmm. Just 1.75 gallon before boil, sticking to book instructions which suggest considerably less water in sparge, mash - only 2 gal total. After boil, let cool passively to 180 (about 15 min), then add 1 oz Centennial for 30 mins, continuing to cool to 140 after 35 mins, then about 10 more mins with wort chiller to 78. I used a grain bag to separate the ...
1.032 gravity after mash @135 degree, about 1.75 gal. Had a bit of trouble with the mash temperature - first too high (because I struck at 170 - dope), then a bit too low. Having a real strainer made the sparge much faster than last time. After the 60 min boil, I wanted to cool to 180 with immersion coil, then add hops and sit for 30 BUT it cooled within 5 min to about 140, so stopped there, added 1 oz Citra and let sit for about 40 min, then cooled further to about 80 before transferring to ...
more careful with sparging this time - colander within brew bag, slower process, less spillage.Try to start with close to 2 gal boil since I seem to lose 0.75 to 1 full gallon in the 60 min boil. While I used 2 gal total water plus 1 cup for mash/sparge and first run made sure I had 1.75 gal runoff, the second run produced less than 1.5 gal, so I'll need to add water to boil to assure that I get 1.25 after boil since I seem to lose about 0.25 to grub. After collecting the residual wort the ...
Mashing this time in pot and in oven at 170 (the min for the oven). Was able to keep at about 150 throughout. Gravity after mashing before boil 1.026. Gravity after boil and cool is 1.05 BUT there's only about 0.75 gal so I have to add 4 cups water, after which OG is 1.038. Lots of suspended solids so we'll see how much settles out - the taste is fantastic even after having diluted with tap water - aroma also quite good.5/17 - 430 pm - fermentation overflows bubbler so need to install the ...
5/10/2015 - 5/10 - to secondary, probably lost half a cup to trub, decent bitter not much aroma, decent taste. Will wait a week then add hops for another week5/10/2015 - my hydrometer reading was 1.034 after boil, but most likely before it was cooled down5/17/2015 - pretty clear beer, nice amber color, a bit yeasty smelling, no hops aroma - added the rest of Citra (0.5 oz?) in 2 different bags - hard to stuff into bottle/carboy - now we'll see if I ever get them out.5/23/2015 - transfer to ...
