I got a little less volume as I left a bit behind with all the hop sludge due to a clog in the cooler. Still got a little more than 4.5 in each carboy.
1-21-16 - Last time I didn't hit the efficiency level and only got a 7.5% batch. Will attempt to do a batch/fly sparge this time. Given the amount of grain, I am going to try to hit 60% efficiency and get an 8% beer this time. I will do 6 gallons strike, 2 gallons batch sparge, and 2 gallons fly sparge to see what I end up with.1-23-17 - Pitched the yeast without a starter...thinking with this high SG i should have done a starter. Will wait until tomorrow to see the progress and possibly ...
1/6/17 - We used the batch and fly sparge combo. This ended up getting us a much higher efficiency than we were shooting for. Hoping this doesn't bring out too much of an alcohol flavor. 1-21-17 I racked this to secondary and it was at 1.010.1-30-17 put the ski beer carboy in the keg fridge to try to clear it up. Hazy, will wait until 2-3 and keg.
Final gravity was the same for the safale and notty yeast. This was for the receipe of Single Hop (Cascade) IPA. Changed the name of it on 6.22.17 for the CX Picnic.
10-1: by the time we got around to sparge, it had been in the mash tun for 75 min.10-17: left in there for 17 days, ended at 1.023 or 7.5%
10-17: left in the primary for 17 days and then racked. Got a read of 1.018 or 6.5% abv
7.31.16 - I did a slow fly sparge (about 45min) and ended up with a 1.064 OG (targeted 1.067), turned out very efficient. Two 5 gallon batches, one with Bells Two Hearted washed yeast and the other with Safale 05 to taste the difference.8.17 - kegging the safale yeast batch. Ended at 1.0085.
Had an issue with the fly sparge in that it came out too quick and didn't properly rinse the sugars. OG started at 1.035 and required a little more than half pound of sugar to get it to 1.050. Will note the final gravity to get accurate read of ABV but guessing it will be a 4.7% beer, still a great summer beer.7/28/16 - tested the OG and I was at 1.012 or around 4.88% ABV. There were some issues with the gravity reader so not 100% sure about the OG, I used the old school hydrometer for the ...
Transferred to keg a little early to be ready for Megan's party. FG ended a little bit lower (1.007), great flavor when moving into keg.
Added the Amarillo and Simco hops after 4 days. Will dry hop for three days and rack it Saturday evening.June 14th- kegged a little early to be ready for Megan's party. Great hop flavor ending at only 1.008 FG which is exactly where it needed to end!
