First time with modified grain bill and hop profile - session like. For Patrick's party. Single grind and cold fly sparge caused lower efficiency.
Small adjustments to 50/50 water profile, new wheeled stand. Hops will be within strainer bags this time. Slightly thicker mash at 1.4 inside bag, double grind.
BIAB, Thermopen, and pH meter all descend on this attempt to make PU. Efficiency higher than expected again on this batch meaning water was added post boil to bring OG in line with expected. Calculated to 76% preboil, and 78% post. Need to dial this into all recipes in future.
Tweaks to recipe, third brew, adjusted grains, double grind, used bag to clean grist faster, recalculated hops based on alpha acid
Modified from Mad Fermentationalist for partial mash/extract brewing.
added water to ferment to get SG down from 1.063. Use 0.5-1 gal more water in kettle next time
Mongrel grain bill = made up 8 lbs with 200g Acidulated malt, 200g Marris Otter, 200 g Vienna, remainder 2 row. This is modified version of The Mad Fermentionalist's Cryo NEIPA. Cryo dry hop additions have been modified by doubling final Citra and Mosaic in the keg. Sparge water was short by 1 gal and mash temp was high by a couple degrees. Preboil SG was low so I added 6oz of corn sugar - may have overshot.
First run with modified refined recipe, all Marris base with some barley. Used 11 lbs base malt - half over recipe. O Gravity better this time but still below recipe. No mash out, slower sparge. Temp is much higher via probe jacket. Will take hours to cool. Used S-04 dry pitched at 64, risen to 66-68
First runnings went one gallon over, stuck sparge, total of 8 gals pre-boil, cloudy and loads of protein. OG came up short but better with finer grind and slower sparge rate. Used dried Safale s-04 directly on top. Add half dry hop on day three and half on day 7 - ferment up to day 10, squeeze hop bag and cold crash.
Over sparged to 8 gal preboil, countering with 90 min boil, hops start at 60 mins. Forgot the whirlpool tube AGAIN. Grain mill needs to get a bit tighter. Efficiency calculated only to 66% - hence the extra boil time - likely browned this beer a bit deeper. Add dark grains at the end of the mash next time and don't squeeze the dry hop bag.
First attempt at all grain of this recipe, batch sparge resulted much lower efficiency than required, perhaps scale up or use better sparge, this will turn out to be more "session" IPA, 1 gal brew kettle loss means scale up to 6 gal batch size, higher temp reduced stuck sparge issues, less stirring of mash, bag and tray will help, slow the sparge down
First attempt at all grain for this recipe. From AHA recipe release. Dry hop in two stages; 2 oz in the fermentor for 7 days, 1 oz in the keg with dental floss retainer, hoping the dry hop period is not too long
Specific gravity calculated short of 1050, supplement with 130 g of Amber DME. No water added to fermenter to bring up volume - took it directly from kettle. Mash tun was converted to brew kettle with false bottom. Need to do a true batch sparge next time without grain bag.
Short of 2-row, used .5 pound Marris Otter and .5 pound Pilsner malt. Short of DME, used 100 g corn sugar.
OG seems very high. Cooling was very fast due to stirring/whirlpool at 10 after boil and during cooling.
Seems light on body and IBU. Time will tell.
2.5 g of bittering hops seems too low on IBU. Could be a misprint.
Used Maris Otter for 2 row pale, boiled in 5 gals, i tsp of gypsum, added 1.5 liters of water to fermentor, less than one hour from cooling to pitching, yeast starter >24 hours old stirred on stir plate
first time using distilled water rather than mineral
Added Marris Otter to original recipe and upped the DME slightly, got a high OG of 1.067 rather than 1.064 called for by recipe, dry hop in bag at day 8, no secondary
Early morning start, hit the 1.040 SG right on despite low 144 F mash, used Safale US-05 fermented at 18 C
same as recipe only 0.2 lb DME was Amber, ran boil 3 mins longer than 0 min, use WY0001 California from young 800 ml starter, dry hopped after 14 days (could be sooner next time), will let it run for 5 days
.5 gal of cold break hop waste, 60 min boil, added secondary hops over 10 minutes from 30-20, adjusted grains for slightly sweeter finish, used Safale US-05 dry yeast, no rehydration, Aqua mineral water, for MS after school event Nov 11
Rainy day put me under cover, used a White Labs Cali 1 L starter, added water up to 5.5 gal (by mistake), flame out to pitch 45 min (left one bag of ice in cooler), very little hot break—all hops were nylon bagged. Added brown sugar at day 2 but ferment seemed to stop after that. After 5 days keusen was not down but gas bubbles had stopped in the airlock.
slow to ferment despite ideal pitch temp, lid leak may cause oxidation, Used 1 lb Morris Otter, 2 lb Crystal 60 grain, 6.75 lbs both light and amber liquid malt extract, steeped in large mesh bag, all hops were bagged with much less cold break, stirred cooling wert, boiled 3 gal with late addition LME, added water up to 5.5 gal in fermentor, used tapped bucket with suspect lid for ease of pour, check seal—lid was leaking, replaced with white lid Monday night. Always match white lid with Brew ...
used Safale US-05 for this, dry
