Used the 2016 hop schedule of .5 oz FF at 60 and again at 20. 1 oz mosaic at 5. 1 oz simcoe dryhop. Collected 3 gal first runnings. Boil volume was nearly 6.5 gal. Need to adjust water vol calculations based on more recent brew sessions.
Pre boil gravity was high (1.050) so I added about a quart of water bringing volume up to 6 gal and gravity to about 1.047.
NB sent extra pound of oats so brewed thinking it was 11 Lbs but it was 12. Collected 3.75 gal for strike and 4 for sparge. Collected 5.5 gal at 1.055 first runnings. Added .5oz citra at 5 min. 1oz each citra and galaxy at flame out and then 2oz each citra and galaxy at 140 degrees. These hops soaked up a bunch of beer I guess because only 3.5 gallons made it into the fermenter.
Ordered 1.5 lbs Munich instead of 1.25.
Preheated mash tun with small pot of boiling water. Heated strike water to 166. Toon awhile to dump in grains and initial mash temp was about 151. Next time overbheat. First runnings just over 3 gallons. Heated sparge water to 185. Too much sparge, ended up boiling just over 6.5 gallons and left some in the mash tun. Ended boil with about 6 gallons and 5 into fermenter.
Mash ph was 5.5-5.7. Sprinkled in citric acid and ph lowered to 5.2. Mash temp held at 152-153. Preheated tun with hot tap water and overheated sparse water approx 3 degrees. Mash for about 90 minutes. Post boil volume was slightly short because I stopped sparging when I had collected a total volume of 6 gallons. Next brew use same numbers and sparge until empty. Og was 1.067.
Brew session should match wicked good batches. Same recipe different hop schedule. First runnings right at 2 gallons. Sparge collected just over 6 gallons. Mash was 153. Added approximately 1/8 tsp of citric acid and mash was right at 5.2. Preboil gravity was 1.050.
Exactly 2 gallons first runnings. Mash volume is fused in. First runnings gravity was about 1.075. 6 gallons to start brew. Preboil gravity was 1.045. Final volume was a bit low at just shy of 4 gallons. OG was 1.053.
Heated 7.3 gal strike water to 164 and mashed in. Attempting no sparge. Shooting for 153. Started at 158 so stirred a lot and dropped to 156. Checked ph after 10 min - ph was 5.9. Added 1/4 tsp citric acid to mash and lowered ph to 5.3 - 5.5. Mashed For over 50 min and end temp was 51. Final boil volume was 5 gallons an 1.040.
Heated 3.75 gal of strike water to 169. Added .5 tsp of citric acid. Mash temp at 153 and mash was between 4 and 5. Mashed For hour and 45 min. Mash temp ended at 149. First runnings gravity was 1.080. Collected a little over 2 gallons from first runnings. Maybe 2.25 or so. Less than 2.5. Spare water heated to 185. Soaked for 10 min. Preboil was 1.046. Boiled 60 min. Added .5 ctz and 1 each mosaic and citra at 5 min. 1 oz each citra and mosaic at flameout. 1.5 tsp of yeast nutrient. Pitched ...
Heated 3.5 gallons to 170. Initial mash was 156. Added .5 tsp of citric acid and 1/2 at Of tap water to lower mash temp to 154. At 30 minutes ph was at about 5.12 and temp was 153. First runnings was right at 2 gallons and 1.080. At just over 30 min boil, gravity was at 1.053 and volume was a bit over 5.5 gal. Boiled just over 1 hour. OG was 1.059 - better efficiency and higher mash temp than last time so hopefully a higher FG and fuller / sweet body like hoped. Need to reset efficiency and ...
First runnings was only 2.5 gallons. Sparged until tun was empty and preboil volume was about 5.75 gallons. Pre boil gravity was 1.063. Clock was broken but somewhere between 30-40 min into boil the gravity was 1.067. OG was 1.076. Volume into fermenter was 3.5. Dry hopped 1 oz simcoe.
3 gallons strike water heated to 170. Mash temp started just over 150. Ph at ten min in was 6 . Added .25 tsp citric acid. At 20 min ph was lowered to 5.2 a 5.3. Mashed 90 min. First runnings was just under 2 gallons at sg of 1.075. Heated sparge water to 185, second runnings sg was 1.023. Preboil gravity was 1.040. Adjusted grain absorption to Account for again over sparging. Boil vol was approx 5.75. Mid point of boil gravity was 1.045. Boiled a bit longer than 1hour. Original gravity was ...
Heated strike water to 170, let rest for a few in mash tun, mashed in and mash temp was about 152. Shooting for 154. Added .5 tsp of citric acid which lowered mash from 5.9 to the 4.9-5 range. First runnings was a bit over 2 gallons. I thought I collected too much sparge water but it was actually closer than I thought. Preboil gravity was 1.042. Boiled for just over an hour, added 1.5 oz of 2.6 AA Hallertaurer and ended up with just over 4 gallons in fermenter. For next brew, change mash ...
initial ph was 5.99, added .5 tsp of citric acid and ph dropped to between 5.2 and 5.6. FIrst runnings gravity was 1075' First running volume was just under 2 gallons. stopped sparging when reach 6 gallons. added a bit too much sparge water because infusion info below was incorrect - I set that I wanted 5 gallons in the fermenter instead of 4 gallons. 1 hour boil lost 1 gallon, approximately 1 gallon left in kettle, fermenter volume just at 4 gallons.
initial mash ph was 6 , added 0.5 tsp of citric acid and stirred in,ph dropped to 5.15-5.2 in various spots of the mash, first runnings was about 2 gal, 5 gal sparge heated to 180, 1st runnings gravity 1.085, sparged too much, boil volume just under 7 gallons, pre-boil gravity ~ 1.045, adjusted recipe volumes to reflect more accurate results
ph strips read well below desired ph, did not add any salt or acid, grain absorption actual was 0.18, first runnings was 2 gal exactly, boil off was more than usual, ended boil with less than 5 gallons, slightly less than 4 gal in fermenter. added 1 oz Citra after 7 days in primary.
.25 tsp Epsom and 1 tsp gypsum in both mash and sparge, boil off was .5 gallons
did not add any salt or pH stabalizer
added <.5 tsp gypsum to strike water, <1.5 tsp of 5.2 pH stabalizer
first brew with water treatment - added 3/4 tsp gypsum and 1/4 tsp Epsom salt to 4 gal mash and 1 tsp gypsum and 1/4 tsp Epsom salt to 5 gal sparge
Actual first runnings = just under 2 gallons, pre boil volume just under 6.5 gallons, mash grain absorption closer to 0.18 gallons per pound, kettle turn loss is 1 gallon,
