72 degrees today. Likely one of the last warm days of the year. Great day for a brew.I've spent some time tweaking the last session to better match my gear. Hopefully I won't have 8 gallons of wort to boil down this time! Also adjusting for the 1.78 gallons of dead space in the mash tun. Adding that to the mash water calculated to be 2.99 gallons and subtracting that from the sparge water which is 4.45 gallons. So we have 4.77 gallons of mash water and 2.67 gallons of sparge water. The ...
Great day for a brew! 55 degrees out now and partly cloudy. This is the second round with the BrewZilla and first run with the DigiBoil electric kettle for sparge water. Using Door County Raw Honey from Max & Dee Martin, Sturgeon Bay, WI 920-495-8457. Very excited. Popped the yeast at 9:20am.Adding 1.78 gallons to mash water to account for BrewZilla dead space Giving 5.19 gallons of mash water. Mashing in at 164 then mashing at 153 for 60 min. Couldn't find the stopper for the overflow ...
It's a warm one today, 82 degrees now with a high of 84 degrees. First brew in 5 years. Got a late start due to digging out all the gear. Had to run to the store for a thermometer as mine original is missing. This is also the first run with the new BrewZilla, very excited. I also went with locally grown cascade hops which rocks.Programming the BrewZilla to heat to 158 for 3 minutes. Then drop to 149 for 60 minutes. Then 169 for 60 minutes.Accidentally added rice hulls before putting in ...
Did this session at Kasey's house. It was 82 degrees out and sunny. Brewgr had cert issues at the time. Hence, me taking these notes after the fact.Had good mash for the most part. Overshot the strike water temp. Targeted 164 degrees and heated the water to 170. Let it sit to cool a bit to cool. I tossed into the mash tun at what I thought was 164 degrees but it was still a bit warmer than that. Should have stirred the water. I ended up a degree hotter than planned, 154.For sparging, I ...
Took the day off to brew this batch for Dave Dubovsky. Nice day, partly cloudy and 57 degrees at 10:15am.Heated strike water to 165. Tossed it in the mash tun and poured in the grain while Dave stirred. Hit 153 degrees.Sparging went very well. Held a good 169 degrees and it took about an hour.We now have to move into the garage for the boil as the rain came early. The boil went very nicely, started slow and added heat as it progressed. The boil went very well. Added the cluster hops right ...
It's a beutiful 68 degrees out and sunny. Great day! Doing another run of the german pils to fill the coffers.Whent over on the strike water temp. So, had to let it cool. Then undershot the mash temp. Boilded a gallon of water and had one person pour it in while another stirred and I watched the temp. Hit exactly 149 degrees at the end.Mashed at 143 for 20 min, then 149 for 1 hour.
First batch since tearing my Achilles tendon. And, first batch with the new catalyst fermenter! It's a balmy 41 degrees today. Much like the 39 degree day when I brewed this recipe the first time.I've rounded off the grains and hops to the nearest half pound or half ounce. I also dropped the .2 oz of willamet hops and the .6 lbs of table sugar. I'm hoping to remove a slightly sour subtle note from the finish. I also altered the target boil size from 7.5 to 6.5 gal.Heated the strike water ...
Starting out at a sunny 74 degrees out today. Nice day for a brew. With this batch, I'm going to do a multi-step mash. I did some reading and decided on the following:Initial Infusion Equation:Strike Water Temperature Tw = (.2/r)(T2 - T1) T2Mash Infusion Equation:Wa = (T2 - T1)(.2G Wm)/(Tw - T2)where:r = The ratio of water to grain in quarts per pound.Wa = The amount of boiling water added (in quarts).Wm = The total amount of water in the mash (in quarts).T1 = The initial temperature (?F) ...
It's 74 degrees and rainy on this fine July Sunday afternoon.I've noticed in previous batches that I had a little less wort in the fermenter than I thought. So, this time we are sticking to the recommended water levels for mashing and sparging.Heated the strike water to 165 degrees. And, the mash temp, in turn, was a degree higher than planned. Mash temp was 154 degrees. The grain went in pretty fast. Mike Koshak dumped the grain in while I stirred.Started heating the sparge water with 50 ...
Slipping a brew in on a Monday. First time I've ever tried to get this in after work. 86 degrees out but humidity is down, so not as nasty. It's supposed to cool off this eve which should really help with the chilling of the wort later.Heated 3.5 gallons of strike water to 165 degrees but only hit 152 for starting mash temp. Not the end of the world but a little surprised.Started heating the sparge water with 38 minutes to go on the mash. Hoping it lines up well.Mash went well. Dave ...
Starting at 10am, 63 degrees out and sunny. High of 75 today. Perfect brewing day!Heated the strike water to 165 degrees. And, we hit our target of 153. 1 degree above recommended strike temp consistently allows me to hit my target mash temp.Didn't start the sparge water heating soon enough. Pretty much need to get that going 40 minutes ahead of when you need it.I pre-weighed out the hops before the boil by the gram. I added about 4 grams of Saaz hops to the first toss to match the amount ...
76 degrees and humid out today. Hoping to get this session in before the thunderstorms start.Mashing at 151 degrees for 60 min. Actually went 1 hour 45 min. Had some delays. Did not beat the storms, had to move into the garage.Starting boil with 8 fucking gallons of wort at 1.032. Can't say I'm not pissed off right now.3 hour boil total to loose some water.Started 60 minute timer at 2 hours in. Added first round of hops.Added lemon peel and second round of hops with 20 minutes left.Tossed ...
Beautiful sunny day. 60 degrees out, perfect brewing day.Heated strike water to 168 degrees. Mash temp was 153 degrees. Only lost 1 degree in the mash cycle.Sparged at 170 degrees. Water made it to temp right when I was done draining the mash.I ended up with a lot more wort than expected for the boil. So, boiling an extra hour to remove a gallon of water from the wort.Chilled wort down to 78 degrees and poured it into the fermenter and pitched the yeast. Then realized that I forgot to ...
It's 39 freaking degrees out so a little cooler than I was expecting. Also, don't have 1/2 inch ID tubing so had to run back to the WBHS to get tubing.Hit 145 degrees for initial mash temp. Heating an additional gallon of water for the mash.Added 3/4 gallon of 162 degree water at 13 min to hit 149 degrees.Actally mashed for 1:20.Fly sparged near 170 degrees. It wasn't easy to keep the sparge water temp up because it was so cold out.Chilled wort to 75 degrees and loaded the carboy. Pitched ...
