Kev's first brew. Brewed with Kev & Paul. We came up a little short in fermenter, maybe 9.5-9.75 versus 10 pounds. Used kiddie pool with ice to chill. Gotta get a wort chiller. Used top metal shelving from outdoor table over kettle to sparge.
brewed on 3/4
Poland springs tank has white lab yeast east coast ale WLP008, American maid tank has safale us-05
Didn't make OG estimate, as I spilled a bunch of wort. At day 12 fermentation, transferred to secondary and cold crashed. Waiting a few more days and then will Keg..
Second time at this recipe.added about 1 gallon of water, then 1.060 at 80 degrees. corrects to 1.062. Added spec of remaining hops - Czech Saaz and Nelson Savin
lots of boil over on this one..
Brewed 11/21. SG looked like 1.058 area.. filtered with mesh. Used muslin bags for hops.. English ale yeast pitched from new white labs packaging. kind of a pain to use.. need two hands. Transferred to secondary on 12/6/2015.
Started with about 2.5 gallons in mash tun. not much room in pot for sparging. 1st beer that was kegged.
Do 4 lbs of grains to about 1.62 gallons of water at strike temp of 159.88. sparge with 2.3 gallons. After 4 days, no bubbles. Got a new packet of same yeast and pitched again. 3 days later, still no bubbles. Took hydrometer reading and it was 1.010 at 70 degrees (adjusted to 1.011-calculated ABV to 4.3%). Fermentation had already happened without me noticing!! Not sure what the extra yeast did?? Put into secondary on 10/18/2015. More grain next time! Bottled on 11/3/2015. FG was ...
Wort came out much darker than expected. OG also came in much lower than expected at 1.050, but wort was settled and sat for about 6 hours before OG reading, as I broke hydrometer and had to go buy another. Once reading was taken, yeast was pitched. Did not use sock bag for hops. Do hops added directly to boil cause darker color than if bagged? Corrected OG from 70 degrees to 60 degrees is 1.051. FG taken at 1 week was 1.013. Final Gravity at 3 weeks was 1.013 (calculated to 5% ...
Original gravity came in at 1.045, lower than the expected 1.050. boil loss was nearly 1 gallon. pre-boil gravity was 1.033. FG came in at 1.004, corrected to 60 degrees was 1.005. which means an 89% attenuation and 5.25% ABV. Nice light color going into bottle. Used candy drops - 1 drop into 12 oz bottle. Brewed 9/5, into secondary on 9/13, bottled on 9/19. Tried it on 10/2, it was still pretty flat. Tried again on 10/10/2015, much better, starting to get more carbonated. Will ...
