This came out to a 5.5% ABV
Switching the recipe to Irish Yeast. Temperature a little too low, 146 degrees. Added a little more hot water last 45 minutes to increase the temp.
I am going to substitute northern brewer hops with Willamette for this recipe. I also decided to add an extra pound of 2 row because my efficiency has been pretty low during the last few brew sessions.
I forgot to put the flaked oats in. I put them in with 18 minutes left in the mash. I had a rigorous boil because the pre boil gravity wasn't were I wanted it. Ended up with a little less liquid in the fermenter but I think I will have decent beer. The original gravity was 1.048.
I drained the initial running's slightly too fast. This led to a lower than desired pre-boil gravity. I think if I have a more vigorous boil I should be able to get close to a 1.05 Original Gravity. I got to the OG that I wanted by the end. I think this beer will come in right around 5% ABV.
I am using Moutere instead of El Dorado hops. They didn't have Moutere in the brewgr system. I also decided to switch the last two hop additions. I added Wai-iti at 10 minutes and Moutere at 1 minute. I added as much of the hop smudge at the bottom of the boil kettle as possible. I am hoping this will have a nice aroma but not too much bitterness.
I have no idea how this will turn out. I wanted to experiment with some of the hops that I bought a while ago . I am trying to replicate the Votemeal from Faction brewing. They use mosaic and citra hops though. I am also using all of the Cascade hops that I grew last year and those are hop cones. Had to change Propane tank 12 minutes in.
The mash temp was a little bit lower than what we wanted. James and I brewed this together. The Original gravity was about 1.05. We are hoping this will be our second successful brew so we can put it on tap.
I forgot to preheat the mashtun so the mashing temp was lower than I wanted. This might make the beer a lot sweeter and have more alcohol in it. Initial Pre-boil gravity was too low so I had a more vigorous boil to try and concentrate the beer more. It worked, it just meant that the final batch size was smaller than 5 gallons. Was short by about a half gallon. Joe and Dad helped on this one, it was a lot of fun.
