First solo brew. Intended to make a Brown English Ale. Style guide indicate it was closer to an American Brown Ale or Brown Porter. Due to first time brewing mistakes (temperature control, sparging) and equipment issues (messed up jacketed steam kettle) efficiency was less than ideal. OG was 1.030. FG was not measured. After bottling, the beer came out tasting very much like Anchor Steam and mellowed considerably with age tasting very much like a Brown English Ale. For those preferring a ...

I got this recipe from a friend soon after I started my all grain ventures (thanks Frank!). It quickly became one of my favorites. I have substituted a few ingredients on this batch and it is also the first 10 gallon batch I have attempted. I will keep half of it for my own pleasure and the other half I will give to Andrew when he returns from deployment. Andy is not big on very dark beer, so I will substitute this for the OldGoat Darkness (see notes on my Darkness recipe). My first attempt ...

One of my first All Grain beers. This was given to me by a friend (Thanks Frank) who adopted it from a Surly Bender Clone. One of my staples. I have made this a few times now and change it a little each time. The original recipe (Surly) called for all of the specialty malts to be Simpsons (Chocolate = Simpson's Chocolate, Oat = Simpson's Golden Naked Oats, Crystal = Simpson's Medium). I found it hard to get these at my local homebrew supply, so I substituted for an equivalent SRM. Worked ...

My first homebrew ever. Not sure what I was thinking with only 1 min. hop addition. It was January 1997. I was just going off notes I had taken. There weren't any fancy online homebrew apps back then, heck there was barely the internet.
