Special Instructions

1.
Heat 4 gallons with 1.60g each of Gypsum and CaCl, 1.4g Baking Soda
2.
At the end of the mash, add 0.40g each Gypsum and CaCl
3.
Sparge with 1 gallon of RO water

Notes:

Cal common yeast - pours yellow-orange with 2 fingers of foam that dissipates pretty quick, very clear. Aroma is a slightly tart yeast phenolic, somewhat citrus-like, and a bready malt this is very light; kind of a common brewery aroma if that makes sense. Taste is more wheat bread with a subsiding orange element that fades to just wheat bread. Body is light to medium and carbonation is a little sharp. I don't have anything to compare it too for Kentucky Commons but it is like a more robust Miller High Life. This is a good recipe for playing off of. 3.5 stars as it's quite enjoyable but not memorable.

Notes:

Both beers pour a burnt orange with almost no head; Ner-Saure has a bit of lasting head but Tomasgard does not despite both being carbonated. Tomasgard has a tart brown sugar smell. Ner-Saure has a weak bready aroma, nothing else perceptible. Tomasgard flavor has a full malt profile, wheat bread flavor with light yeast phenolic and an almost tart presence to it that isn't sour, and a touch of chocolate at the end. Ner-Saure flavor has an almost orange and bread presence but not sweet, and emphasis on malt as expressed by the wheat bread flavor. Body on both is thin to medium and both have slightly sharp nucleation. Tomasgard promoted itself as having a milky, caramel, and toffee flavor, which I did not pick up on at all, so perhaps this will increase with age. Ner-Saure promoted its flavor contribution as difficult to describe and what I pick up on is difficult to describe as it’s not noticeable from my experience. 3 stars overall for both due to lack of novelty.
