I am looking to use some of the fancier hops from the YVH hop box that I got for Xmas. I am going for something with a stronger malt presence but still simple so that I can accentuate the hops.
Grains: NW Pale for base, Vienna for malt presence, Carapils for head retention
Hops: Bravo for bittering, El Dorado for a hoppy base, then different dry hops in 4 different carboys (1 gallon each) for dry hopping after racking to secondary
Yeast: US-05
Water Profile: Yellow Dry with enhanced Chloride

4.Hop stand for 30 minutes

6.Following primary fermentation, rack to 1 gallon carboys for secondary and dry hop accordingly
El Dorado hops - same color and 2 fingers of foam. Aroma is sweet with tropical fruit, pineapple mostly. Flavor is about the same though the sweetness is subdued and the flavor is more melon than pineapple. There is slight bitterness but not much. Carbonation on this one is spot on. There is almost an herbal quality to this beer, but it is really just very light to the point of being instantly forgettable. Considering how bland this is, I'm going to say this is really a little worse than average. The quality of the beer is fine, it's just the flavor is very bland.
Bru 1 hops - same color and pours 1 finger of foam. Aroma is tropical fruit with candy sweetness; the tropical fruit can't really be pinned down, maybe a guava or papaya but not quite. Taste is similar in that it is tropical fruit of some sort that then evolves into a lemon flavor, not much bitterness. It is a pleasant hop considering the fruity palette, but it lacks a bite of any sort that makes for good flavor, maybe for a hefeweizen or said on, but not a pale ale or IPA; might be good as one hop to use on a NEIPA. For me, this is a 3 star beer as I enjoy enjoy it but I don't particularly like it.
Suicide, mix of all hops - same color, pours one finger of foam. Aroma is tropical fruit, slightly sweet, and hop vegetal. Flavor follows nose though the hop vegetal flavor dominates at first, then fruity candy, then bitter and a touch of yeast flavor. Body is good and carbonation is okay. This rendition is okay, solid pale ale but the hop flavors are muddied and there's nothing really spectacular coming through.
Medusa hops - same color. Pours almost no foam but what does form lingers. Aroma is sweet pineapple. Flavor is pineapple initially followed by grassy hop and a faint bitterness that coats the mouth. Agree from prior review that carbonation could be increased. Not terribly distinct from the stonefruit variety, but the bitterness on this one is definitely more profound. 4 stars again as it's a better than average light pale ale. I'd like to see if I can't incorporate some form of complex malt character on my next iteration of this to make it outstanding, like a 5% Special B addition or even some dark Candi sugar.
Stonefruit hops - color is a golden yellow. Pours half a finger of foam with aroma of papaya and honey. Flavor is grassy hop initially followed by sweet papaya coupled with a hint of malt. Not much nucleation sharpness, could be a little more carbonation but not too far off. Overall, a good, lighter pale ale that has a definite papaya note to it; oddly enough, papaya is not a stone fruit but that's the way the cookie crumbles. I would say 4 stars given a lighter pale ale.
