The MDIS was so good that I wanted to do it again, but I had a lot of problems trying to sparge over 22# of grain in a 5 gallon cooler lauter tun. So I decided to use a different technique (from "Radical Brewing", by Randy Mosher) in which I mash half the grain, lauter 4 gallons of it, and mash the other half in that. I'll then add 2# of 2-row, mash that, and make a lower-gravity stout.

This recipe was cloned from Mothers Day Imperial Stout.

Special Instructions

1.
Wet crush 1/2 the grain (not the flaked barley or rolled oats)
2.
Mash in the crushedgrain and ~1/2 the flaked barley and rolled oats with 4 gal of 167* F water and 1 tsp gypsum
3.
Next morning, lauter 4 gallons and set aside, keeping warm (167* F if possible).

Lauter 2 more gallons and set aside.
5.
Clean out the lauter tun and mash the second half of the grain with the 4 gallons of wort.
6.
After an hour, lauter 6 1/2 gallons, first using the 2 gallons from the first batch, then water with 1 tsp gypsum.
7.
Bring to a boil and proceed as normal.
8.
Crush and mash 2# 2-row with the "spent" grain after raising the temperature as necessary.
9.
Lauter 6 gallons using 1tsp gypsum and proceed as normal.
