With a tip of the hat to both the English steel workers for whom this style was conceived and my grandfather who was a steelworker, open hearth mild is a low ABV, malty brew with a clean finish. Hearth on cap- though a crane might be easier to see. 10/26/13- changed to 2-row base for cost, as this is intentionally really cheap to make- and it's ok to use cooked rice instead of flaked, since it's waaay cheaper[see above]. 8/16- removed rice, it's a bit fiddly to work with. If you want to try, substitute 1lb of the 2-row for flaked or cooked regular rice, and use a 3 step mash.
