Brown full mash. Mash notes: Used grain bag.12:43 pm Mash start time. 153 deg. 2:43 pm mash end time. 145 deg. 2.5 gallons first runoff. Sparged with 5 gallons 180 deg. Had issues with Sparge unit so dumped the water into the mash tun, let it settle on temperature then slowly ran off second run. Between 7 1/2 and 8 gallons into the kettle. Pre-boil gravity around 1044. 3:40 start of boil. Gypsum in at boil. Boil time 60 minutes. Adjusted hops because my scale showed less than 1 ounce. ...
Fun day with son Sam brewing. Great to spend time together and applying some chemistry and engineering practices. Spent a lot of time assessing equipment and getting going since I have not brewed in YEARS. Loved the brew day. Even though we had to work thru various issues, mostly due to my need to “dust” off my memory of good brewing techniques, we plan to brew again soon to apply learnings from the experience.
