First BIAB all-grain!
Strike volume = 7.5 gallons at 159F
Mash volume = 8.4 gallons
Mash at 153F for 60 minutes
Pre-boil volume =6.25 gallons
Post-boil volume = 5.25 gallons at 212F
Post-chiller volume = 5.0 gallons at 70 F.
Upped the 2-row from 9 to 10 to help the ABV and in case FG is stuck at 1.020 or so -- also to get decent ABV if efficiency drops to 70% or less. . Brewgr says 5.5% ABV now for a 5 gallon batch at 70% efficiency.
If I get more than 75% efficiency I will add water to increase batch size a bit, OR just make a stronger batch.
Hops adjusted to 1 oz. East Kent Goldings at 60 min., and 0.5 oz. Willamette at 10.
This time also BE SURE to cool wort down to bottom end of yeast temperature range BEFORE pitching yeast. Also should I rehydrate and then cold crash the dry yeast like I'd do with liquid yeast? Hmmm...
Method:
1. Heat one gallon of water to boiling and put into the cooler that already has the bag. Put top on. This is to preheat the cooler.
2. Heat 6.5 gallons of water to 159F and add to cooler with bag. Re-measure temperature. Should be 159F.
3. If not 159F, add boiling water or ice cubes to change to 159F.
4. Add grains (from inside house) to 159F water and stir really well. Should be 153F. If not, adjust to 153F.
5. Put lid on cooler. Wait 60 minutes.
6. Open cooler and take temperature. Get a sample and find S.G. of mash with hydrometer.
7. Raise bag and let drain. Put bag on grate or colander and squeeze!
8. Take another sample and re-test S.G. with hydrometer.
9. Put grain bag in tub and pour wort from cooler into kettle.
10. Boil as usual. All-grain done!
NOTE: From batch #6, original (first brew) hops level was perfect. Brewgr and tinseth both calculate IBU of original batch at about 25-26. However, that number is with no correction for batch sugar density. However, gonna try using same amount of hops as first batch with this first all-grain batch just to see how it works out.
