Northwest Fresh Hop 2018 Brew Session

First runnings are 1.041. During whirlpool, I lost a gallon to 1.5 gallons of wort to the wet/dry hops, which I set in the mash kettle above the screen and it worked really well. Pitched about 300mL of older slurry given required amount of 225mL fresh slurry. For bottle conditioning, I'm going to try using 2.2g of CBC-1 and see how that goes. 8/21 - Probably high krausen reached this afternoon, about 1.5 inches of foam. 8/24 - Fermentation is complete, effectively. I would like to make a variant of this by adding mango juice to a gallon. 8/29 - pulled 1.014 on the pycnometer. No hop flavor whatsoever, just a lot of malt flavor that is quite good but not for a fresh hop ale. I dry hopped 3 gallons with 3oz Cascade pellets. I racked 1 gallon onto mango juice and 0.5oz Cascade pellets. 9/1 - Putting in another 3oz of Cascade pellets so that I can be sure that there is a lot of hop flavor here. 9/4 - bottling today. Pulled 1.014 again. I'm bottle hopping with Cascade pellets as I don't want to deal with the remaining leaf hops. Flavor is malty with a definite Cascade edge. 9/14 - I bottled the gallon that I added mango juice to and it was a shit show. There was a lot of trub and hop remnants that escaped the bag I was using to filter. Then there wasn't enough pressure to get the bottling wand going so I had to tip the bottling bucket with the ball valve only. This beer was exposed to a lot of oxygen so I wouldn't doubt it picks up some of that character. The flavor on it was just okay, mango and then some muddled yeast and malt. I don't think that I'll care for this at all.

You wanted an OG of 1.042. It looks like it will be under.

Tasting Notes (2)

CheeseNips

Tasted on 9/24/2018 by CheeseNips

Notes:

Mango variant - pours half a finger of foam, orange in color, and good clarity. Aroma is a fairly bright grapefruit aroma of cascade hops followed by malt sweetness. Flavor is more more of a peach cobbler with fruit flavor most assertive followed by a sweet bread. The after taste has a bitter edge that quickly dies off, leaving a sweet breath. Body is medium in viscosity with a little bit of nucleation sharpness. This is more enjoyable than the plain fresh hop, attributable to the fruity character, which is well balanced. I don't get a fresh hop flavor, but that's okay. 4 stars as it's a great flavor, only lacking the more assertive hop character.

Notes:

Color is dark orange and pours about 1 finger of foam. Aroma is Cascade hops at the forefront followed by a malty bread with a touch of sweetness. Flavor is a slight bit of hops coupled with a mild bread flavor and then a fruity yeast ester. There is a very slight bitterness with some hop flavor at the end. As a pale ale, it's pretty good, better than average, but I don't get a strong, fresh hop burst from it. I like the beer in general but it didn't achieve what I wanted. I'll go 3 stars since it is quite good but not what I wanted it to be.
