Harry-My-Son IPA Redux Brew Session

Since I'm using an old slurry, I'm putting together a vitality starter, so to speak, by putting 200mL into 1L of 1.036 wort to go on a stirplate for 24 hours. When I bought the grains, I had to mill the oat malt 3 times to get a good crush. 1.052 first runnings. Collected 7 gallons of wort with a gravity of 1.036, so I boiled a little harder to get the volume down. The Randall still gave me grief, even with the rice hulls and loose leaf hops. I will consider bagging the leaf hops and then adding rice hulls for the filtration piece next go round. Poured out a bit of the liquid from the yeast starter and pitched the rest after 1 minute of aeration. 7/21 - added 1oz each of Calypso and Ekuanot as the beer is at high krausen 7/23 - fermentation is done. It is getting hot in my house though, 75F throughout the day due to a lot of heat outside. 7/28 - racked to secondary and weighed 1.0098 on the pycnometer. Great flavor on this one! Added 2oz of Mosaic for the dry hop and will bottle in a week or so. 8/3 - bottling today. There was a little bit of a grassy flavor to this beer, so I hope that goes away after fully primed. During bottling, I added 2oz of vodka soaked Mosaic hops into the bucket.

Based on boiling 7.00 gallonsliters at 1.036 for 60 minutes, this will decrease your wort by 1.00 gallonsliters, bringing your after boil OG to 1.041.

You wanted an OG of 1.046. It looks like it will be under.

Tasting Notes (1)

CheeseNips

Notes:

Pours light yellow with 2 fingers of rocky foam. Aroma is melon, pine, and resinous hops. Flavor is very resinous hop and pine along with a distinct bitterness on the back end. The body is soft yet there is a real sharpness from the nucleation. This is more of a hazy west coast IPA than anything with a truly dense, profound hop character. The hop flavor on this coats the mouth but doesn't linger long. I think this is a good beer but it's not what I was going for. I will give it 4 stars as it is good but not what I envisioned.
