Notes:

Shared with my brewing buddies while brewing our next batch. They loved the brew (they are also coffee drinkers so the moderate coffee roast flavor tasted great to them). Also tasted great as a makeshift black and tans with my friends homebrewed malt forward IPA. Given the rave reviews, the mix with vanilla, and nice mix potential I will give it a 4 star this time!

Notes:

Still a solid 3 star. Roasty/Coffee flavor is still the primary flavor but I've found that if I mix about 3ml of vanilla (a few drops) it turns more into a chocolate flavor. I would say this is more of a coffee/chocolate stout than an oatmeal one. The body is a little thin and not very creamy mouthfeel. Nice warming alcohol but nothing biting. I will have no problem finishing the bottles off, but next time I'll be looking for something a little different since coffee is not a favorite flavor of mine. Next time consider: -Less roast malts -Add vanilla in some form -Maybe a little less ABV for inc drinkabliliy -Optimize water profile for higer Cl and SO2:Cl ratio for better mouthfeel and less accentuated bitterness.

Notes:

Love the black color but ended up being a little more on the roasty/coffee side than I was looking for. Consider lowering midnight wheat and chocolate for next time. Might also be good with some lactose next time to add some sweetness to balance the roast out. Definitely still drinkable, just not quite what I was going for.

    Want to get the most out of your grains? Heat water to 170, put grains in and let it sit overnight. Run the water out and batch sparge with 170 degree water. Don't know what system you have, but this will take all the steps you need for maximum saccrification of your mash. Cheers!

    I had read about overnight mashing although I haven't tried it yet. So far I'm only 2 brews in and have only done extract with specialty grains so far. My next move will be going BIAB which I'm planning on doing with my next batch (probably this recipe). Thanks for the tip I'll see what ends up working out as I plan my next brew day. Cheers :-)

    Major tip for BIAB. After soaking grains for an hour, do NOT squeeze bag. Just pour spare water over it if you sparge at all. Sqeezing will release tannins in your brew and give it off flavors. I did many BIAB's and made some damn good beer. Now I converted a Coleman cooler into a mash-tun. No more bags. Again, cheers!

    I've heard lots of conflicting info about that with some people saying never squeeze and others saying it's a myth and tannin release being more a factor of pH and less of the squeeze. Thanks for sharing your experience, much to think about!
