Fat Tire is one of my favorite mainstream beers. This is my first attempt at making a Fat Tire clone and while it does not taste exactly like Fat Tire, it is close. The Caramel really stands out in this beer, both in Aroma and Taste, something I don't get out of Fat Tire. All in all, this turned out to be a wonderful Amber Ale and I'd be glad to make it again.

I had the opportunity to taste this great homebrew. It is a perfect Amber. Great caramel flavors that are well balanced. I wish I had more. A large grain bill that produced a complex malt profile.

Thanks! If I make this again, I'm going to up the chocolate just a tad (to 3 - 4 ounces) and add another hop variety, maybe Northern Brewer or Hallertau.

Have you tried using a Belgian yeast strain? I used a Wyeast 1762. The New Belgium website said they use Willamette, Goldings, Target hops. You can use Fuggle or Willamette as a substitute for the Target.

I've only brewed this bad boy one time, and it turned out really good. It was one of my best beers, but it wasn't quite Fat Tire. How did yours turn out with the Wyeast 1762? Is your Recipe posted here on brewgr? I'd love to compare it with mine.

I used the recipe in the book, Beer Captured, and with respect to the authors copyright, I won't post the recipe as my own. It wasn't perfect but it was really close. The original was clearer but the same color, and the original has a little more orange / fruit. That being said, the clone was more drinkable. It's a Belgian style ale so I would experiment with yeast strains. I've brewed it twice now, one of my favorite summer beers!
