Notes:

Black as night. 1/2 inch head, off white, lasts a couple minutes. Good lacing. Good, clean, slight hop aroma, not overpowering. Slight coffee, toffee taste. Bitter, but well balanced with malt. Not as heavy as the color indicates. Good. I like it. Might try a different dark malt with less flavor to stay away from the dark roast flavor. I like the color but wanted to have a flavor like a lighter colored beer.

Notes:

Very dark. Quarter inch head, off white in color, dissipates slowly. Needs a little longer in bottle. Not a slap you in the face hop aroma, kinda subtle. Stout or porter like malty aroma almost overpowers the hops. Probably needs another ounce of hops added for dry hopping, maybe Cascade or Citra. Good balance between malts and hops. Slight coffee and chocolate, which I was trying to stay away from. Good mouthfeel, but needs more time in the bottle. I tried a Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale last week and this tasted very similar. A little less coffee and chocolate note, which I was trying to stay away from. I wanted the color, but not the heavy coffee flavor. There is some, but not real strong. The hops are very balanced with the maltiness of the grains. Some non IPA drinkers actually liked it, said it was real smooth. Next time I might try a small amount of black patent instead of the Carafa II.
